Tolerance
is the ability to give equal importance to the way of being, of
thinking and living of others than to our own way of being, thinking and
living. If we understand that our beliefs and customs are neither
better nor worse than others, but just different, we are respecting
others. No need to share an opinion to be able to consider as valid as
any other. What is needed is to try to take the place of others.
From
every perspective, things are perceived differently. So group analyze a
situation, listening to the views of every member of it, we can
evaluate it better. Share differences enrich us. Sometimes throughout
history we can see examples of people whose ways of acting are born
precisely from the lack of respect for others. Pass inconsiderate and
unfair attitudes is an indirect way of disrespecting the sufferer. So be
tolerant is also defined, to step forward, make a choice for justice
and peace.
Tolerance, the willingness to accept something we don’t necessarily agree with, is an ability that can ensure peace and harmony within any given society.
The ambiguity of the word tolerance might seem scary though, because tolerance might implicate accepting the differences of others as if they were our own. Tolerance should help us see that we are not all the same, but that we can agree that we all have a little light inside, enabling us to see into others.
Why then has it been so difficult for humanity to accept the other as himself? Why then has it been so difficult for humanity to accept the other as himself? What happened to Tolerance? Tolerance should not blind us to reality, but merely help us see reality from a different perspective. We wonder why are we constantly seeing what others look like, what they have said and done, and even what colour they are. Why do we then keep searching for where they are from, instead of looking at how they have come up? Tolerance needs to take place somewhere, or chaos is bound to occur. Haven’t we learned that we cannot judge a book by its cover? Yet, we keep seeing the picture that is lying in front of us instead of looking into the bigger picture. We all have glasses that we put on and take off as many times as we like when we are confronted by different situations. Why then should we not add tolerance to that and see if our eyesight is not blurry? Tolerance should help us understand all things, without prejudice or predetermined thoughts.

Tolerance has either slowly disappeared or has been exaggerated with time. When compared to the previous generations, our world today is showing tolerance towards things that were not tolerated just a few years ago. Homosexuality, divorce and single parenting could be cited as a few examples, when, on the other hand, notions such as polygamy, slavery and child labor are not tolerated today. Tolerance, would have a different meaning if people from different generations and societies were to come together.
TOLERANCE TODAY!
Though it is undeniable that we are all different from the outside, is it not the same red blood that flows in our veins? The same spirit, which inhabits all of us? Tolerance is not only accepting the differences of others, but also becoming the difference. Some might not necessarily want to shed light on tolerance or humanity, but they have accepted their own differences, as well as the differences of others, either consciously or unconsciously.
Tolerance today could be seen within a group of people from different backgrounds sharing a meal, a bi-racial couple, a multicultural party, multi-religious gatherings or even a bird cleaning a crocodile’s teeth. Religion has been a reason for the diminishing tolerance over the years. However, in many parts of the world, different religions cooperate without paying much attention to their different beliefs. Tolerance is also seen in some parts of the world amongst people from different ethnic groups and backgrounds. It is a notion that is being facilitated through the opening of frontiers for studies, work or leisure. However, even in the information age that we are living in we hear of shootings, bombings and killings all in the name of a certain group of people. We ask ourselves if these acts should be subjugated to tolerance. Should we then tolerate certain things and not others?
TOLERANCE: TO SEE OR NOT TO SEE?
When we will see that we are all the same, maybe then all the hatred and atrocities will come to an end. Maybe if we saw that people from all religions, politics and organizations belong to the human race before belonging to specific groups, we could cultivate tolerance.
If we could see our eyes in those of others, will we then manage to tolerate their actions? Can we manage to see that sometimes the webs we have woven are a flag waving to surrender or a protection and warning against coming events? Maybe then the webs will hide the differences that might prevent us from being tolerant. How long can we close our eyes to the injustice around the world and watch the world keep turning?. The world was flat at first, then we were told it was round, now it is back to flat with technology. Tolerance will surely make the world a peaceful place to breathe in. We don’t know what we exactly are and yet we trust ourselves to think we know about the world and how it functions. Can we then not trust others to do the same?
Tolerance will help us love more and love has the power to make us feel alive. Let’s vote for a little tolerance in our lives each day for a better future for all!
